Since several hundred people gathered to watch its cornerstone be placed on November 17, 1930, downtown Fargo’s Black Building has captured imaginations of North Dakotans. The 8-story art deco tower, wrapped with banks of large windows in intricate cast iron frames, would serve as the bustling center of commerce of Fargo for decades.

Block 9 sits at the corner of Second Avenue North and Broadway in historic downtown Fargo. It became a surface lot after the block of mixed-use, multi-story buildings that once faced Broadway were leveled between 1968 and 1984.
Pre-automobiles, streets were designed for people by default. Pictures of Broadway in the 1920s show a street filled with pedestrians in an active mixed-use environment.
For anyone who has been living under a Geodude, the Pokémon GO craze is in full swing nationwide, and Fargo is no exception. The game has its diehard fans as well as its critics, but at the end of the day, the impact is impossible not to notice people are walking more.
